Nintendo: How it Has Made an Impact
On the Video Game Console Industry
Throughout
the years, Nintendo has made a huge impact on other video game consoles by the same
Sony company, as well as other video game console manufacturers such as
Microsoft. It is a more advanced video game if you compare it with the
prototypes such as Atari which was made in the 1970’s. Nintendo started making its own brand of video
games also in the early 1970’s.
In 1988,
rival video game company Sega launched its first video game console called
“Sega Genesis.” The console was released in Japan, United States, and many European
countries. While Sega was emerging onto the scene, Nintendo fought hard to make
sure its video game console stay on top and compete against Sega. Nintendo came
up with another console similar to the Nintendo Entertainment System; the
so-called Super Nintendo Entertainment System was first introduced in November
1990 in Japan. It would start a new advanced video game revolution in North
America in 1991, Europe and Australia in 1992 and Latin America in 1993.
Unlike its predecessor NES, which
had failed to rival Atari in the 1980s, Super Nintendo rocked the video game industry
by stepping up their game. The company looked at how well Sega was managing
their video game business, and decided they were going to beat them at their
own game.
While Sega’s Genesis was more aimed
at older teens and young adults, the Nintendo’s video games were more
“kid-friendly.” SNES did not sell well as its predecessor, the NES, but the
video games they released The Legend of
Zelda and Super Mario World won the
popularity contest.
This spurred on companies like
Microsoft to enter the video game industry with their first Xbox release in 2001
in the United States. Microsoft also added online streaming to the Xbox, which has
so far released 8 generations of Xbox video game consoles. Not to be outdone,
Sony also added streaming services to their PlayStation models which are currently
also in their 8th generation of video games.
During the early Eighties, Nintendo failed
to compete with other video game companies, so it formed a partnership with
Sony in the 1990’s to make the PlayStation consoles. The first one, PS1, was
released in 1994 in Japan, and in 1995 in the US. It did not only rival Sega,
but the console also influenced them to create more video game consoles
including: Nintendo 64 (released in 1996), Nintendo Gamecube (2001), Wii
(2006), etc.
As we are nearing 2020, there are
already rumors about Sony and Nintendo coming up with the Playstation5.
Microsoft is also rumored to be coming up with a new Xbox called Anaconda. Both
systems are rumored to be doing away with the disc readers, and doing most of
their gaming using cloud computing. What a fascinating world the video game
industry is becoming!
